How Blogging Can Help You Lose Weight

Bloggingby Alicia Orozco

Weight loss is an extremely important topic for me. I have always been overweight and have tried so many things without success. Diets, pills, exercise (never kept it up), and pretty much everything any other overweight person has tried; I was no different. Each time I started something new it didn’t stick and I never lost any weight.

So I went online, like most, to look for something ‘magic’ that would get me to finally lose weight. I did find that ‘magic’, but it wasn’t what I expected it to be. Never would I have thought that writing down my thoughts, my goals, my failures, and just my life, would result in me losing weight… and LOVING it!

Through blogging, I found a world that was living the way I wanted to. A healthy life with small splurges on the side. People who made that life work for them and showed that it could be done. It should also be mentioned that these people weren’t rich celebrities, they still had go to work, raise kids, and get their own workouts done. All in all, they were everyday, normal people.

So how can ‘blogging’ help you lose weight? For me, it helped me in the following ways. I hope these, and blogging, may help you too!

Accountability. A  blog can keep you accountable because you’re not hiding anything – even from yourself! You have other people reading your goals, and coming back to see you make them happen. It can encourage you to keep going – even when you don’t think you can.

Pit-Falls.  Yes, they happen and you might not even see them coming or realize when you’re in the middle of a struggle. Blogging is a way to keep EVERYTHING tracked so you can go back and review what happened. Once you identify the ‘problem’ you can take the steps to correct it.

Inspiration to Continue. We have all run into dry spells. Usually this happens after a week or two of going strong with your new goal.  Maybe you need a good recipe to get back into the flow or perhaps you want to change up your exercise routine. Luckily, there is a blog for that and that is where your community of bloggers really become vital to your success. Visit a few of your fellow bloggers spaces for new perspectives and new ideas. Inspiration is all around you!

Community. When the choice to lose weight is made,  it’s easy to feel like you are all alone in the process. But you are not alone. There are bloggers out there that have or are going through the same thing you are. It is a satisfying feeling to know that you can ask for advice or just read their exploits to remember this.

To Be Unique & Inspire. Your story is your own and you should OWN it! You got inspired to lose weight, you struggled with those cookies or chips (maybe both  - I know I do) and you succeeded! Even if it is a pound, or a walk around the block when you have never done it before, you deserve to share your story with others. Who knows; that story could inspire them to get up and get moving for the very first time.

It Feels Great. I cannot deny this feeling. When I hit publish on my blog for a new post it feels amazing. For me it means that I am sticking to something, for once, that is changing my life. It might be a slow and steady journey but it is happening! I would recommend that feeling to anyone.

As a side note, I should mention that blogging can be time consuming. In fact, for me it is almost a daily job. But, then again so is changing my life. If you do decide to start a weight loss blog  or any other kind, know that it does take some commitment, but its often totally worth it.  You get the opportunity to be a part of a supportive community and you will not be alone there.
